Cultivar profile

Koroneiki Olive Oil

Koroneiki is the backbone of Greek olive oil, a small, tough, oil-rich olive grown across the Peloponnese and Crete. It ripens early, tolerates drought, and produces an oil that is green and herbal on the nose with grass, green tea and tomato leaf, then distinctly peppery in the throat. Phenolic content runs naturally high, so Koroneiki dominates the high-polyphenol category. The fruit is tiny, so yields are modest, and quality depends heavily on how quickly the mill can process what the pickers bring in.

Tasting Koroneiki

Fresh Koroneiki reads green and slightly medicinal in the best sense — herbal rather than vegetal. As it ages the aroma fades before the pepper does, so a flat nose with a lingering burn usually signals an older bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Koroneiki high in polyphenols?
The cultivar naturally accumulates high phenolic concentrations, and its early ripening lets growers pick green while phenol levels are at their peak.
What is Koroneiki olive oil best for?
Raw uses: tomatoes, feta, bean soups, grilled fish and greens, where its herbal pungency stays intact.
